Petra Kvitova stoops to Carla Suarez Navarro in the second round – China Open 2012
World number five, Petra Kvitova, is facing the slump of the season these days. The latest setback she received as at the hard courts of Beijing during the second round clash against the 46th ranked Spanish star, Carla
Suarez Navarro. She lost the match in straight sets 3-6, 2-6; lasting just 68 minutes into the encounter.
The fourth seed Czech won all three previous meetings between the two athletes but couldn’t make an impact on Monday. She was completely bamboozled by the 24-year-old Spaniard who took benefit of the several unforced errors made
by her opponent. It was more like the 22-year-old Czech beating herself than her opponent. She was committing suicidal errors; not been able to sail the ball to the other corner of the court on multiple occurrences.
Navarro was tested to her limits in the opening game of the match but she kept on fighting back at the crucial points and held her serve after a hard fought battle. Surprisingly, she had her opponent under the cosh in the following
game and took advantage of the silly unforced error that helped her to post an early lead. No point was lost by her in the third game that pushed the scores to 3-0 in her favour.
Both players held their serves in the following two games before the Spanish underdog won another breakthrough that gave her a stupendous lead of 5-1. She was serving for the set but the onslaught from the Czech fourth seed didn’t
allow her to run away with the show on that occurrence. However, the second opportunity was grabbed with both hands by the Spaniard but not before she was tested rigorously.
Kvitova started the second set in the most dismal fashion. Nothing was going her way and she lost the second breakpoint in the fifth game that allowed her opponent to pile up a lead of 4-1. A trade of breakthroughs didn’t hurt
the Spaniard and she served emphatically well for the match. Kvitova is the first of the top seeded player to go out of the event.
Former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, is the next rival for the Spanish star.
