Petra Kvitova threatening her opponents at the US Open Championships – Tennis News
Former Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova, wasn’t successful in defending her Grand Slam title earlier this season, but she certainly is eyeing for the US Open Championships gold from the coming Monday. The reigning world number
five Czech tennis ace has clearly stated that she is riding her tremendous form and will take off her Grand Slam campaign with all her guns blazing.
22-year-old Kvitova was having a drastic run of form throughout the running circuit until this month. The booming Czech superstar was having a title drought this year when she stepped into the hard court season at Montreal and
beat all the odds to win the coveted Rogers Cup trophy in style. Kvitova then marched into the semi-finals of Cincinnati Masters tournament but wasn’t successful against Angelique Kerber of Germany.
She made her thumping comeback at the New Haven Open and thrashed the seventh seeded Russian diva, Maria Kirilenko, in the title match, 7-6(9), 7-5, to win her second WTA Premier Series trophy within a month. With her emphatic
victory over Kirilenko, Kvitova sealed the huge prize money she would receive on winning the Emirates Airlines US Open Series just before the beginning of the last Grand Slam event of the season.
Kvitova’s return to form is certainly alarming to a number of other top class professionals who are eyeing to claim glory at the US Open Championships. The Czech number one has cited that she is very hopeful of performing the similar
sort of wonders at the Flushing Meadows and she is very confident of lifting her second Major title next week.
"It's unbelievable - I played three tournaments in a row and won two," Kvitova said at the presentation ceremony of New Haven Open. "I've played a lot of matches and I'm feeling more relaxed and confident on the court. I hope all
of this will continue into the US Open next week."
With a 41-12 winning record for the season, Kvitova will enter the competitive US Open field as the fifth seeded contender. She will play her opening round match against Polona Hercog for the first time in her career.
