Petra Kvitova thumps Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in quarters - Western and Southern Open 2012
World number five, Petra Kvitova, ousted the 23rd ranked Russian, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(4) to book a spot in the semi-final of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio.
She is the pick of the players in the tournament carrying on the supreme form she acquired in the Rogers Cup at Montreal.
The Czech started off with a serve hold and broke serve to take a lead of 2-1. She repeated the same scenario and posted a stupendous lead of 4-1 before losing out a breakthrough to her rival that diminished her lead to 4-2.
However, the Russian youngster was unable to win another breakpoint rather dropped her serve game that gifted the opening set triumph to the Czech. Kvitova was extremely pleased to win the opening set and the punch in the air with
the cries of come on clearly portrayed the need of this win in the books of the Czech.
However, the momentum wasn’t carried to the second set. Pavlyuchenkova capitalized on her serves and didn’t allow her opponent to take any sort of advantage. Despite having three opportunities to break serve, the 22-year-old Czech
failed to convert any and the tie-breaker round was enforced into play.
Luckily for the reigning Rogers Cup champion, the tired Russian couldn’t hang on and failed to keep the match alive; losing out in the tie-breaker.
Pavlyuchenkova had played a set earlier in the day to complete her pre-quarterfinal match against the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. She was tired from the days first match proceedings as well so it was
very difficult for her to sustain energy for another set against Kvitova.
On the other hand, the Czech star was fresh and didn’t play twice in the day. The conquest on the Russian has confirmed the date between the fifth seed German superstar, Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova.
Other successful semi-finalists include the likes of the Chinese number one, Li Na, and her fellow competitor, the former world number one Venus Williams. Both semi-finals are scheduled to take place on the eve of Saturday.
