Petra Kvitova to resume tennis at the Brisbane International 2013 – Tennis News
Former world number two, Petra Kvitova, will feature in the season-opening event at Brisbane next year. It will be her third appearance in the tournament that yielded her the title last year when she overpowered the Russian superstar,
Nadia Petrova, in the final to lift the trophy. However, she didn’t return to the arena to defend her title and opted to open her season in the Hopman Cup at Perth. The 22-year-old Czech also featured in the Brisbane International in 2009 but was ousted in
the opening round of the tournament by the in-form the-then fifth ranked Serb star, Ana Ivanovic.
Kvitova began the current season with four straight victories at the Hopman Cup and reached the semi-final of the Apia Sydney International as well as the Australian Open in January. It was another mind-startling start for the
left-handed Czech powerhouse, who was in the hunt to become the best player in the world. However, her dreams were shattered when she diagnosed with a severe injury that kept her out of action for a month until the start of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.
The eighth ranked Czech lasted two rounds at Indian Wells and was swept away in the opening stage at Miami. She reached the semi-final at Porsche Tennis Grand Prix but her performance in Madrid and Rome was terrible. However, the
Czech powered her way into the semi-final of the French Open and coupled it with a quarter-final exit at the Wimbledon Championships.
She gained confidence and won the Rogers Cup at Montreal; reached the semi-final at Cincinnati and gathered her second trophy of the season at New Haven Open. She continued to work hard and reached the fourth round at the US Open
in New York. However, the injury struck her back and the second round exit at China Open coupled with an early injury-forced withdrawal from the Women Tennis Association Championships in Istanbul didn’t help her cause at all. However, she gathered enough courage
to contest in the Federation cup final tie against Serbia and registered an important win against Jelena Jankovic that helped her country to retain the Federation Cup title.
