Petra Kvitova trounces Lucie Safarova in the semi-final – New Haven Open 2012
World number five, Petra Kvitova, trounced the 17th ranked compatriot, Lucie Safarova, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to book a spot in the semi-final of the New Haven Open at Yale.
On the eve of Thursday, both players locked horns for the first time in their professional careers and the Czech number one ousted the inferior ranked compatriot in just 67 minutes to continue her terrific run of play since the
inception of Rogers Cup 2012.
Kvitova commenced the match with a serve hold and so did her competitor. However, the turnaround in the proceedings was witnessed for a short period of time that featured a swap of breakpoints. The interesting thing in the trade
of breakthroughs was the commanding show from the 25-year-old Safarova who broke serve with ease whilst saved a couple on her serve before falling apart.
Second seed Czech did well to hold on to her serve in the following serve and won the second breakpoint in a row to take a lead of 4-2 at the crucial stage of the set. Safarova couldn’t break serve back and lost the first set battle.
The second set battle witnessed first four games being held by respective serve players. However, a breakpoint for the Czech in the following game and coupled with another thumping breakpoint in the last game of the match rounded
off a commanding victory for her.
Kvitova commented about Safarova, "I've known Lucie for about five years. It's weird to play her, but it wasn't that bad tonight. During the match you don't think about it, you just try to play your best. We both played well tonight."
She further added about her stunning form, "I'm very proud of this. If someone told me after Wimbledon I would be the champion of the US Open Series, I don't know what I would have told them.”
The Czech further added, “I don't care about the money - money is not the important thing in the world and in life. I'm just really proud I'm the champion.”
Petra Kvitova lock horns with the fourth seed Italian star, Sara Errani, in the semi-final.
