Petra Kvitova upsets Victoria Azarenka; moves into title match – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Czech Petra Kvitova moved into the final of the 2011 Wimbledon Championships after surviving a mid match lapse against Belarusian Victoria Azarenka. The eighth seeded Czech secured a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win against the fourth seeded
Belarusian, taking a little close to two hours.
Winning the toss, Kvitova opened serve and after some resistance put herself on the scoreboard, followed almost immediately by Azarenka. However, this was the last time Azarenka saw herself on the scoreboard. Sending forehands
long and wide with a couple of into-the-net shots in between, Azarenka gave up her second service game allowing the Czech to go a break up in the set, leading the score 3-1. Another break later with successful service games, the Belarusian was ready to serve
out the set at 5-1. Hitting three consecutive aces with an error from Azarenka at 40-0, Kvitova clinched a breadstick win to go one up in the set score.
The Czech hit a total of thirteen winners with six aces as she registered an impressive 82 percent win on her first serve, taking only 27 minutes to secure a breadstick victory.
Down but not out, Azarenka turned over the tables in the second set as she broke Kvitova in the second game to lead the set 3-0. Kvitova finally managed to get on the scoreboard in the second set as she added to her ace count,
squaring off the fourth game with two successive aces on deuce. From there on the score progressed on even footing as both pros managed successful service games. Serving for the set at 5-3, a long shot from Kvitova gave the second set to Azarenka. The Belarusian
clinched a 6-3 win to level the set score at one set each.
Surviving a mid-match lapse, Kvitova once more found her footing in the third set. The Czech once more forced errors from Azarenka in the second game of the decider as she held onto her games to go 3-0 in the lead. Capitalising
on a double fault from Azarenka in the eighth game, Kvitova broke the Belarusian to clinch a 6-2 win and seal her semi-final victory.
Kvitova moves on ahead to play Russian diva Maria Sharapova or rising German Sabine Lisicki in the title match here.
