Petra Kvitova vs Agnieszka Radwanska – Match Preview: TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships 2011
This year’s top eight women are set to contest for the season-ending finale at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships. The Championships are placed at the Sinan Erdem Dome in the cosmopolitan city of Istanbul and the players will
compete for the largest prize money purse on the WTA calendar.
The second match that will be played on Friday the 28th of October is a kick off between current Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and the eighth seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska. The two debutants will take up the gauntlet
for a spot in the semi final of the event.
The two rivals have only contested against each other twice in their professional careers; once in 2009 and 2011. The first time they met was at Generali Ladies Open which is held in Linz and Kvitova was able to outshine Radwanska
in straight two sets to take the lead in the head-to-head series. However, during their last meeting at the AEGON Classic in Eastbourne Radwanska avenged her loss and was able to bring the head-to-head score to an even score of 1-1.
Kvitova got off to a great start this year by bagging the first tournament of the tour at Brisbane. She then became a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open to eventually bag another title at the Paris Open. In addition, she managed
to accomplish the impossible when she bagged the Wimbledon Championships this July and after a drought of few months finally won the Generali Ladies Open held in Linz which gave her the confidence that she needed to take to the Championships.
Kvitova’s performance at the Championships has been flawless and even though, she is a debutant at this event, she managed to skilfully and tactfully handle both her first round robin stages by defeating the reigning world number
one Caroline Wozniacki and sixth seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva. In doing so; Kvitova comfortably reserved a spot for herself in the semi final of the event.
On the other hand, Radwanska too has managed to a take a notch higher in her performance, style and skill. Although, she lacks a power play like Maria Sharapova or the Williams sisters, she depends on tactical accuracy and persistence
to construct the point before hitting a winner. Moreover, she is also known as the ‘Ice Princess’ because of her calm and focused demeanour on court.
Albeit, she suffered a loss at the hands of reigning world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the first round robin match, this year her most notable performances came on indoor courts, an added bonus for this event.
Most tennis virtuosos are of the opinion that Kvitova will push herself to bag the set in straight sets. However, Radwanska is not going to go down without a fight and will bring on a fabulous form.
