Petra Kvitova vs Caroline Wozniacki – Match Preview:
TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships 2011
The TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships are being held in Istanbul and will take place in the last week of October. It is the first time that Turkey will host such a prestigious tournament. The top eight singles players are invited
to the challenge where they will be divided into two groups of four players each. They will compete against each other at the indoor hard courts of the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey.
The third round of the season-ending event will begin on Thursday the 27th of October and the two red group contestants to face each other are the current Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and the reigning world number
one Caroline Wozniacki.
The two have battled against each other four times in their professional careers and are well aware of each other’s style and performance. In the head-to-head series Wozniacki leads with three matches to Kvitova’s one.
The first time the two met was back in 2009 at Bastad and Wozniacki had thrashed Kvitova in straight sets. The two again met after year in 2010 and they faced each other three times in the same year. The only time that Kvitova
had conquered Wozniacki was on grass courts of Wimbledon. However, Wozniacki is yet to taste Kvitova’s new and improved form of 2011.
The Czech recorded wins over almost all the top players of 2011 including Maria Sharapova and Vera Zvonareva. Kvitova bagged her first Grand Slam this year at Wimbledon and since then has been an unstoppable force on the court.
She not only bagged a grand Slam title but also four more WTA titles, her last run for the title was at the Generali Ladies Linz Open, where she defeated. In doing so; she conjured a much needed confidence just ahead of the yearend Championships.
Moreover, it is Kvitova’s maiden performance at this event yet she was able to bag her first round robin match against Vera Zvonareva and is expected to overpower Wozniacki as well with such a sturdy and powerful form.
Mean while, the current world number one has previously contested twice for the yearend Championships. Her initial appearance was in 2009 and the Dane had ousted Victoria Azarenka and Vera Zvonareva during the first two round robin
matches.
She again qualified for the year-end championships in 2010 and this time she managed to surpass Francesca Schiavone and Elena Dementieva and during the semifinal she defeated Russian Vera Zvonareva in the semi-final. However, in
the final she was unlucky as her winning streak was put to an end by Kim Clijsters.
Although, Wozniacki has never won a Grand Slam, she has managed to pull six titles this year. She attained a semi final finish at the Australian Open in the beginning of the season and then advanced to accomplish six more titles
at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, in Dubai, Charleston, Brussels, Copenhagen and New Haven.
Tennis critics are of the opinion that Kvitova will thrash Wozniacki in three sets. However, Wozniacki is desperate for a title at the major arena and might just pull a bag full of tricks against her adversary.
