Petra Kvitova warms up for the Federation Cup final tie – Tennis News
World number eight, Petra Kvitova, is struggling from viral illness at the moment but still practicing extremely hard and taking special medications to be 100 percent for the Federation Cup grand finale. She will lead Team Czech
Republic against the strong group of Serbia. She is fighting a battle against time to be fit but the 22-year-old left-handed tennis icon believes that she has recovered well in time and is on course to be perfectly fine before the start of the tie.
Kvitova commented while conducting a press conference on Wednesday, “I feel better every day, I feel better today than I did yesterday, and if it goes on like this, I'll be fit on Saturday.” On a query about her expected participation
in the team, she gave a clear cut green signal. Petr Pala who is the captain of the Czech Republic’s team stated, “We expect her to play, we never thought she wouldn't be playing.”
Last year, the Czech tennis ace won the Wimbledon Championships and registered the most emphatic season; winning the Women Tennis Association Championships (year-end finale) in Istanbul. She was also chosen as the player of the
year but the former world number two has seen a major slump in her form this season and dropped multiple places in the ranking as well. She has been the semi-finalist in the two of the four Grand Slams including the Australian Open and the French Open but
her overall performance hasn’t lived up to the expectation. She was ill during the WTA Championships this time around and withdrew from the contest after losing the first Round Robin match.
Pala further added about the competitive Serb team, “They are former WTA leaders and that's what makes them dangerous. They have experience with big arenas, big courts, and big games.” She was pointing towards the likes of Ana
Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic who have enjoyed the stay at the top of the world ranks for a considerable amount of time.
World number 17, Lucie Safarova, will be the other Czech player for the singles contest and the team of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka ranked third and fourth respectively will be leading the doubles show. In the counter
court, Bojana Jovanovski who is ranked 56th is called upon along with the 167th ranked Aleksandra Krunic who is a good doubles player. The team of Czech Republic is quite strong but the upset is also a possibility.
