Petra Kvitova will take on Sara Errani for a berth in the title match at New Haven – Tennis News
Luck has finally started to go in favour of the former Wimbledon Champion, Petra Kvitova, and she has reached the final-four round of the New Haven Open at Yale this week. The reigning world number five will take on this year’s
French Open winner, Sara Errani of Italy, to fight for a spot in the title match of the WTA Premier Series event being played at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, USA.
The 22-year-old Czech number one has been struggling with her form throughout this season but has recently found her winning groove. Her success story started two weeks ago when she claimed her maiden WTA championship title of
the season at the Rogers Cup. She was also the semi-finalist in Cincinnati Masters and has now reached the final-four stages of the New Haven Open to add another trophy to her tally.
Second seeded in the tournament, Kvitova had a comprehensive victory over her fellow compatriot, Lucie Safarova, in twin sets, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarter-final brawl of the tournament on Thursday afternoon. Her mighty forehand is
working perfectly for her and she looks all set to crush Errani in the upcoming semi-final battle.
"I've known Lucie for about five years. It's weird to play her, but it wasn't that bad tonight," Kvitova said of her countrywoman. "During the match you don't think about it, you just try to play your best. We both played well
tonight."
The Czech number one has been absolutely phenomenal in the US Open Series and will finish as number one by the end of it. She was also excited to win the US Open Series and the huge prize money astringed to it but she looked more
concerned about her Friday’s matchup against Errani. Kvitova desires to bag the New Haven Open title before beginning the Grand Slam campaign at the glorious Flushing Meadows.
"I'm very proud of this. If someone told me after Wimbledon I would be the champion of the US Open Series, I don't know what I would have told them. "I'm just really proud I'm the champion, and glad I've played a lot of good matches
and had great results. I'm in the semifinals here in New Haven too. It's all important for my confidence going into the US Open next week."
Kvitova leads 2-0 in the head-to-head series against Errani and is held as the hot favourite for winning the match. A gruelling three-setter is expected, with Errani winning the opener and Kvitova reeling off the next two sets
to reach the title match at New Haven.
