Petra Martic outmaneuvers Monica Niculescu in qualifying 2nd round – Rogers Cup 2011
20-year-old Croatian, Petra Martic outmaneuvered the 23-year-old Romanian, Monica Niculescu; winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 during the qualifying second round of the Rogers Cup 2011 at the Rexall Centre, York University in Toronto, Canada.

Niculescu serving first, had a sixty percent first serve win along with 60% win in first return points. She excellently saved five out of six break points and was able to win two out of three break point advantages that were presented
to her.
Whereas, Martic played the first serve very poorly as she was only able to win 4 out of 10 points. She was only able to save one out of the three break points and had won only one out of the six break point advantages.
Martic on the other hand, won only 14 out of 35 first return points and 43% of total return points; she barely managed to win 46% of her total set points.
Mean while, the total serve points won in the set by Niculescu were 27 out of 47, this was 5% more than her opponent’s. Thus gaining an upper hand with a lead of 1-0; her total set points won were 40 out of 74, making it a good
fifty four percent victory.
After taking a thrashing in the first set, Martic bounced back into the game winning the second set 6-3. The Croatian’s return game was excellent; she managed to win forty two percent of total return points. She struck zero double
faults, utilized the only breakpoint to her advantage and won seventy nine percent of her first serve points.
Martic, had failed to avail any break point as her opponent did not endorse her with a single break point. Unable to hit with accuracy she struck one double fault and failed to save the only break point on her serve, thus enabling
the Croatian to equal the set score to 1-1
The third set saw a comprehensive victory for the right handed 20-year-old Martic, she managed to win 17 out of 28 service points, making it a laudable 61% along with, an above average 56% of total return points.
The world number 86 accomplished a hundred percent of her break points. On the contrary, Niculescu was worn out and was not able to play; she was unable to save any of the 3 break points. She had a mere 39% of total return points
and hence, barely, attained a mere thirty 42% of the total set points.
Overall, Martic served 1 ace, struck 4 double faults and won 63% of total service points along with only 46% percent of total return points, thus, giving her a total of 54% win in the total set points and hence, Martic won the
match with the later two sets in hand.
