Petra Martic thrashes out Naomi Broady in final qualies – Generali Ladies Linz 2011
Number one seed Petra Martic continued her impressive run on the hard courts of Linz as she thrashed out Naomi Broady of United Kingdom in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 on Monday to qualify for the main draw of 2011 Generali Ladies Linz
here in Austria.
Martic has been in terrific form since the start of this week. Earlier in the second round, she crushed Sandra Zahlavova of Czech Republic. The Croat will be hoping to extend her winning streak into the main round as well to clinch
her first title of the season. However, to achieve similar results against quality players in the main draw of Women’s Tennis Association tournament, she will have to improve her serving considerably.
Martic hit a mere 57 per cent first serve in the match. Although she managed to outplay her opponent in the ground play, she needs to work hard on this area of her game play. Facing tough resistance in the opening set, Martic showed
great determination and temperament to clinch the set score lead 1-0. She then completely dominated the challenger in second set of the match as she dropped only a couple of games to close out the match that lasted for only one hour and eight minutes.
Broady hit 8 serves aces at crucial stages during the contest. Converting 75 per cent of the points on her first serve, she gave her a chance to stay in the match. However, she paid the ultimate price for her weak second serve
as she managed to win only 48 per cent of the points on her second serve. It will not be wrong to say that she was outclassed in finer details of the game by a better player.
World number 209, Broady had a great start to her campaign at the qualification tournament. However, she was unable to handle pressure in tense situations in the match to let her rival take control of the contest. The Brit will
be looking to learn from her mistakes and come back stronger on her next appearance at the WTA tour.
Martic made most of the available opportunities in the match as she converted three out of five break points in the match. She served with control and she did not produce a single double fault in the match. Taking her chances,
she secured sixteen out of twenty one points on her second serve, which eventually proved to be the main difference between the contestants.
