Petra Rampre overcomes Sache Vickery in the second round of qualifier – Citi Open 2011
Third-seeded Petra Rampre of Slovenia beat America’s Sachia Vickery 6-3, 7-6(7) to reach the final round of qualifying draw, being played here at the Tennis Center at College
Park, Washington D.C.
Rampre looked like she was ready to maybe go down a little bit, but she seemed to play very strong at the end, taking a good deal of courage to find a way past Vickery in
the decider.
The power of Rampre’s serve kept her out of trouble against the 16-year-old Vickery who struggled to work her way on to the baseline and stayed there to attack. Rampre played
very well in the match and managed to smack winner after winner, keeping Vickery out of play on her service games as the she was trying to recoup the break.
Being the weaker of two, Vickery easily allowed her higher ranked opponent to take the first set and serve for the second set at 6-5, but reviving her chances with a break
of her own, Vickery forced a tie-breaker to decide the outcomes of the match.
Nevertheless, Vickery’s hopes of comeback were efficiently brought to a conclusion when she double-faulted to lose the tie-break against the Slovenian.
Although Vickery changed her plan of action and taking the set in a tiebreak, the 31-year-old Rampre switched it up and played an all out attack style game and Vickery struggled
to find a way to break her.
The Slovenian used her incredible power to frustrate Vickery no end, who was quite irritated by the second set. The consistency Rampre displayed in the second set was incredible,
helping her to secure a break she needed to go 2-0.
The pure consistency in quality and efficiency made it impossible for Rampre to try and force a break as she served for the match. With some excellent serving and strong
ground strokes Vickery broke to lead for a place in the final round of Citi Open 2011 with 58 percent of points in service, 49 percent on return and 54 percent of points in total.
Emerging victorious, the 31-year-old Rampre now leads their head-to-head score to 1-0 and moves on into the final round of the tournament where she will meet Gabriela Dabrowski
of Canada, who edged past seventh-seeded Tammi Patterson of Australia to reach the final round.
