  1. a rock is always petrified.  petrified means converted or turned into rock or rocklike material.

    A petrified log (or petrified anything that was once living) is a log (or whatever) that was buried and converted to stone by the replacement of the woody (formerly living) material with mineral material and infilling of pore space with mineral material.


  2. a really old piece of wood!
