Question:

Petrol Fumes Inside Car??

by  |  earlier

Hi,

Whilst going uphill, my Sportrak began to lose power, then there was a popping sound before the car stopped altogether.

I tried her several times, but she refused to start again.

There was a strong smell of petrol inside the car.

Eventually after 30 mins rest, she started up.

The day before this happened, I had just put some petrol in and she refused to start up. Once again after 30 minutes rest, she started up!

On both occasions I had only travelled approx 10 miles.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

  1. Hi,there is a great poss ability that your exhaust is blocked.Typically when this happens, after a few miles it stops, and won't start usually  losing power, slowing down and stopping. As the pressure in the exhaust slowly drifts out the car starts again,as if nothing wrong. After so long it does it again.Because of all the pressure build up you can get a strong smell of fuel,as you keep putting on the gas because your slowing down.Check with your hand flat held towards the outlet of the exhaust to see if there is any pressure being given out.Check with another vehicle if your not sure GL

  2. Maybe you put diesel in it! and also, when tryin to start it you may have flooded the engine which can leave a petrol smell

  3. Sounds like contaminated fuel.

Probably water in the petrol, if you find the fuel pump and look to see if there is any water in the filter chamber, you may get away with taking out the filter and cleaning it, drying it and putting it back.  But if there is water there it may happen again.

  4. Your problem could be the fuel breather is blocked, this vents the tank though a carbon filter to take petrol fumes. Also check the vent pipe for holes or splits or the filler cap seal could be damaged

  5. Duff HT lead causing a back EMF to the coil, cutting it out.. Fit a new set of HT leads and regap the plugs.

  6. Sounds like "She" is overheating in the inlet manifold, vapour lock

  7. you might have vaper lock?
