  1. electrical engineering is extremely competitive nowadays, although since it's more physics than chemistry it is more interesting (imho). petroleum will likely have a greater emphasis on chemistry. i didn't know that it's an actual engineering major - btw what are its courses?

  2. Where do you live/hope to live. For example, in Canada the petroleum companies are pretty much killing to get engineers. One of the big companies recently came to my school looking for TWO HUNDRED new recruits.

That being said, if you're in an area with very little petroleum and a big electronics industry you're probably better off being an electronics engineer.

  3. I work as an electronics engineer for the defense department. And the place where I work there are tons of jobs in radar, satellite, antenna design, signal processing, weapons systems, GPS, power systems, communications and of course control systems.

My buddy that works with me is a petroleum guy. And he designs fuel systems for ships and aircrafts. And he doesn't have to travel as much as I do. Another guy I went to college with works for an oil company down in Texas and makes a ton of cash. But it's in a really crappy part of Texas I think the movie "Friday Night Lights" was filmed there?
