Petru-Alexandru Luncanu plonks Andriej Kapas to reach round two – Siberia Cup 2012 CH
Romanian challenger, Petru-Alexandru Luncanu, tumbled the Polish contestant, Andriej Kapas, in straight sets at the Siberia Cup 2012 on Monday. He nudged up a 6-3, 7-5 victory against his fellow 23-year-old to secure a place in the round of 16 at this indoor hard court tournament taking place in Tyumen, Russia.
The left-handed from Romania showed awe-inspiring skills to outrun Kapas in their first battle against each other. After bagging the match in one hour and 29 minutes, Luncanu comfortably advanced into the round of 16 at these Russian courts.
Luncanu made a thunderous entry at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place from 19th to 25th November. He drew the first blood in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. The Romanian then held his composure and after sliding his remaining serves, he clicked the opener with a 6-3 win. He blocked the only breakpoint he encountered and cashed the lone break opportunity to inch towards glory.
Ranked 436th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Luncanu lost his path towards the following set. He suffered the first blow in the eighth game and went 3-5 down. However, the Romanian made a spectacular comeback after saving a match point in the very next game. He reeled off last four games and eventually registered a 7-5 success. Luncanu failed to save the only breakpoint he faced but converted two out of five break chances to his advantage.
The Bucharest native jolted down a better first serve share of 77 per cent as compared to his opponent’s 53 per cent and tremendously availed 38 out of 48 points on it. He ended the match with 77 points and prevailed throughout the battle.
Next challenge for Luncanu is the winner of the match between top seeded Evgeny Donskoy, and the Estonian challenger, Vladimir Ivanov.
The local contender, Konstantin Kravchuk, will join Luncanu in the proceeding round. He smoothly kept his entire serves after dusting away all four breakpoints he came across. The Russian required a single break of serve in each set and eventually sealed the deal with a 6-4, 6-4 success.
