Petter Stymne captures Men’s 50m freestyle gold: Day two – 2012 Swedish Grand Prix, Uppsala
Petter Stymne smothered efforts of his competitors by capturing gold medal of the Men’s 50m freestyle on second day of the 2012 Swedish Grand Prix in Uppsala, Sweden on Sunday, February 5.
The 28-year-old Stymne intimidated world-class athletes of 50m discipline with his commendable struggle as he pocketed gold medal of the single lap freestyle event in an astonishing manner. With the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games, the Swedish Championships
serve as a platform for the national players to improve their pace before the mega event.
Stymne has represented Sweden at numerous international levels of swimming. He won a bronze medal in the 4*100m freestyle relay at the 2008 Manchester World Short Course Championships and clinched a gold medal in the same event at the 2008 Eindhoven European
Championships.
He faced strong resistance from Stefan Nystrand throughout the single-lap swim, but managed to outsmart him on the finishing end for gold medal. Stymne’s quickest response to the start placed him slightly ahead of his challengers in the initial 10 metres
of the race.
He was engaged in a neck-to-neck race with Nystrand, who had his eyes on the title, but failed to prove his mettle and lost the crown. Stymne remained nearly two strokes ahead of his subsequent rival and surfaced on the finishing end for gold medal by producing
an effort of 22.45 seconds.
He was chased by Nystrand, who remained just 0.52 seconds slower from his former finisher and stepped on the medal rostrum for silver medal by posting a time of 22.97 seconds. In the meantime, the crowd witnessed a remarkable effort of the 18-year-old Yahav
Shahaff, who stayed just 0.40 seconds behind the silver medallist and hit the wall with an effort of 23.37 seconds for bronze medal.
Stymne’s gold winning effort remained almost 1.50 seconds slower than the world mark of 20.91 seconds, owned by Cesar Cielo Filho from the 2009 Rome World Championships.
Furthermore, the session came to an end after the invincible efforts of all participants while Stymne expressed contentment over his title claiming effort and articulated his desire of making his country proud at the 2012 London Olympics.
