Petzschner/Waske sail into last four after defeating Mertl/ Tattermusch – Eckental Challenger 2011
On November 3, 2011, the 2011 Eckental Challenger entered into the men’s doubles quarterfinals stage of the tournament. The German team of Philipp Petzschner and Alexander Waske played the match against Jan Mertl (Czech Republic)
and Andreas Tattermusch (Germany).
Mertl/Tattermusch had to bid their farewell in the competition as the German pair won the match in a comprehensive victory of 6-2, 7-5. The Germans had won their first round match against the Austrian pair of Fischer/Oswald and
moved into the tournament to face Mertl/Tattermusch.
In the first set, both teams played well as they delivered three aces each. Mertl/Tattermusch did concede double faults twice into the set for they were shaky in front of their German opponents.
Petzschner/Waske had a higher first serve winning ratio with 65%. Their opponents could not do much in their service games as they had a 56% first serve winning ratio.
The German team was also way ahead of their opponents in terms of points won on first serve. They won 92% points but the Czech/German pair could only win 50% of their points on first serve. The impressive service games by the Germans
in the first set helped them create a dominating lead. Mertl/Tattermusch were not at par with their service games.
They were not able to utilize their serves for the win as they lacked consistency and the energy to take the lead in the early parts of the first set.
Petzschner/Waske, on the other hand were having a good run with their service games. They were not aggressive with their serves and neither they were too offensive to concede a double fault.
Their service games were steady which kept their positive momentum going into the match. Mertl/Tattermusch could not counter against the service games played by their German opponents as they won the first set 6-2.
In the second set, Mertl/Tattermusch tried their comeback into the match. They had a 61% first serve winning ratio as they scored four aces and conceded no double faults. The German pair also delivered four aces and did not concede
any double fault either. They had a lower first serve winning ratio but with higher points won on first serve, they were able to create a lead.
Petzschner/Waske were playing as a strong unit for they did not let their opponents break any of their serves. Mertl/Tattermusch fought hard in the second set for the win and to take the match into a third set, but their efforts
went in vain, as they were unable to move further into the set after winning five games.
The German pair kept on winning the games in the second set and won it by 7-5. They have moved into the semi finals of the 2011 Eckental Challenger with the hopes to win the title on home ground.
