  1. The 19td ( Or XUD ) does not have hydraulic tappets; they're shims and buckets.

This engine is also prone to head gasket failure.

Regarding your ticking noise; I've no idea -sorry, just didn't want you to be mislead.

  2. Had a 1.9td engine for years, they are a great engine. Have had a ticking problem with a similar engine and it was due to a haudraulic lifter (tappet) sticking. It could be a sign that the oil needs changing, but it may need changing. Good news is that I would only worry when it is more constant and the repair is reasonably cheap - I believe the part is under £30, probably cheaper if you shop around.

  3. Could it be the air con compressor clutch turning on an off? This makes a good click.

  4. it may have a faulty hydrolic tappet...it may have to be removed and replaced...get a new timming belt changed at the same time.

  5. could you be more specific,,i also have a pug 306 1.9tdi,generally speaking these engines are bombproof, peugot make excellent diesel engines.

    Mine ticks,rattles at times,it will do it's a diesel.

When do you hear it?,,while driving or when idling with the bonnet up ??

Is it loud, sharp - when hot or cold ?

    Some more information would help.

The thing with diesels are they are simpler than a petrol and although heavier and running 2 - 3 times the compression they will tend to last longer,as long as it's not burning oil and the cam belt is changed when it's specified there is little major to go wrong !!!!
