Peya/Soares down Gonzalez/Lipsky to reach quarters – BNP Paribas Masters 2012
Austrian-Brazilian tandem, Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares, battled past the Mexican-American pair, Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky, in a three-set nail-biter at the BNP Paribas Masters 2012 on Thursday. They summed up a 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 victory against their rivals to power into the quarter-finals at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Paris, France.
Seeded eighth in this event, Peya and Soares lost their path in the second set. However, they unveiled their true form again in the final set and eventually clinched the match in one hour and 19 minutes. After earning this fame, the Austrian-Brazilian team moved a step closer towards their fourth year-to-date title.
Peya and Soares made a powerful entry at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy. They drew the first blood in the opening game and took the initial lead. The Austrian-Brazilian tandem held their composure and swiped their entire serves with poise, eventually sealing the opener by winning six games to four. They blocked the only breakpoint they came across and converted one out of seven break chances to their advantage.
Bidding for their third year-to-date title, Gonzalez and Lipsky changed their strategy in the following set. They swiftly bagged their entire serves after brushing off the only breakpoint they faced. The Mexican-American collaboration got the breakthrough in the eighth game after cashing the lone break chance and clinched the equaliser with a 6-3 score line.
In the final set or the super tie-breaker, Peya and Soares sought their early ascendancy. They cruised to a 5-0 lead before closing out the decider with a 10-5 success.
On the whole, Peya and Soares spilled more double faults and clobbered a lower first serve share of 64 per cent as compared to their rivals’ 75 per cent. However, they impressively availed 31 out of 38 points on it and ended the deal with 63 points.
Up next for the winning junction is the Croatian-Brazilian tandem, Marin Cilic and Marcelo Melo, in the last eight. The Croatian-Brazilian junction recorded a 6-3, 3-2 retirement victory against third seeds, Sweden’s Robert Lindstedt and Romania’s Horia Tecau, to set up this meeting.
