Peya/Soares outfox Andujar/Lopez in the doubles draw – Valencia Open 2012
Hot favourite Austrian-Brazilian tandem of Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares took off their Valencia Open campaign in style and registered a thumping straight sets victory against the unseeded local pair of Pablo Andujar and Feliciano
Lopez. The second seeded duo took merely 66 minutes, settling the clash at 6-4, 6-1, to march into the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event in Valencia, Spain.
It was a fairly one-sided contest, with Peya and Soares dominating all the way to victory. Andujar and Lopez were expected to post a more solid performance than they actually did. The Spaniards had a decent start in the opening
set but luck didn’t favour them in the later part of the match. Their momentum slowly died out towards the end of the first set and they could do literally nothing in the following set. Peya and Soares concluded their opening round victory with a breadstick
in the second set.
The Austrian-Brazilian pair served brilliantly in the opener and dropped merely three points, claiming 14 out of 17 points on their first serve. Andujar and Lopez managed to hold their serves in the initial two games before their
opponents delivered the first blow. Peya and Soares broke serve in the fifth game and held their serve to attain a substantial lead of 4-2. The Spaniards utterly failed to crack a breakthrough and had to submit the first set to their opponents at 4-6.
Things didn’t work out for Andujar and Lopez even in the following set and they had to suffer an early setback in the third game to fall back at 1-2. Peya and Soares launched a series of forays upon their opponents and nailed three
successive breaks of serve. The second seeded tandem had a serve accuracy of merely 47 per cent but the three vital break points proved to be decisive in the end. Peya and Soares bagged 27 out of 46 total points being played in the second set and concluded
victory with an assertive score of 6-1.
Peya and Soares will face Slovakian pair of Martin Klizan and Michal Mertinak in the quarter-final rounds of the tournament.
