Peyton Manning surpasses Tiger Woods as world’s most powerful athlete
Tiger Woods has been replaced by Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning as the world’s ‘most powerful athlete’. Woods lost status was revealed as
Bloomberg Businessweek’s annual ‘Power 100’ ranking was published. The loss of yet another status is not pleasing at all for Woods, who is playing his first tournament of the season at Torrey Pines.
Bloomberg Businessweek said that s*x scandals damaged the financial profile of the player and other controversies surrounding him have also affected his earnings to a great extent. Along with earnings, the scandals have
also affected Tiger’s game. This was proved true as last year, for the first time in his career, Woods did not win a single event.
Adding to his lack of wins is the loss of sponsors. Ever since the news of his infidelity came out, Tiger has lost endorsements deals with Accenture, AT&T and Gatorade. Moreover, as 2010 ended, so did Tiger’s contracts with Gillette
and Golf Digest. Tiger had a 13-year long relationship with Golf digest, which was the second longest after Nike. In addition, Woods was dropped from the cover of his own game by Electronic Arts.
After the amount of criticism the player received, not many would have wanted Woods to promote their product or be a part of their marketing campaign. However, despite all these setbacks, Tiger was still the highest earner of 2010.
Last year Woods made $71.3 million, which was a lot more as compared to what other professional golfers earned.
In the power rankings, Tiger has also been surpassed by snowboarder Shaun White. White, who is ranked second, worked his way up from the 51st spot earlier this year. Manning is certainly the most popular quarterback
of America’s favourite sport. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, he is marketable, down-to-earth and recognizable. Last year, the player earned $15 million from various endorsement deals like MasterCard, Reebok, Oreo and Gatorade, just to name a few.
As for Tiger Woods, despite losing yet another rank, he is still the centre of attention in the golfing world. Hoping to make a comeback in 2011, Woods started his season at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. After the
first round, Tiger is tied for 21st place at 3-under-par. The player scored 15 pars and three birdies in the opening round. Giving an average performance, Tiger is still way behind the current leader, Sunghoon Kang, who posted an 8-under-par in
the opening round.
