Pfaff 1222 belt

I have a Pfaff 1222 sewing machine. the belt started to slip and the machine started to make loud clanging sounds and froze.; I have since changed the belt and the machine is still makeing the loud noises and the belt is still slipping. Is there something special I should be doing when I change a belt
