  1. I LOOKED AT THE UNIV OF ALABAMA at BIRMINGHAM, AND WAS REALLY IMPRESSED ! GOOD SOLID TEACHING , WITH PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUR OWN RESEARCH EFFORTS, GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND THE WEATHER, EXCEPT FOR THIS TIME OF YR AT 100+ IS ALSO GREAT!  WITHIN 3 HOURS OF THREE OTHER METRO AREAS... GIVE IT A LOOK

  2. Here's a link to one ranking of departments:

The American Anthropological Association also has a guide to departments (not a ranking) with information about who is on faculty and such.

Even though Michigan is #1 on the list I linked, I think most cultural anthropologists think of Chicago as the best program. All those Chicago PhDs always seem to get tenure track jobs right after getting their PhDs, which is nice. There are lots of good departments though. What areas (topical/geographical) are you interested in?

That being said, you should look around for departments that look good for you.

In terms of getting TA/RA-ships from your department, it's up to the department. On most applications, you can make it clear you want funding and when they admit you they will let you know what package they will offer you.  It really ranges.  Some places won't admit students they don't plan to fund while others will.  You can apply to NSF for some funding for your first year though although it's super competitive.

  3. Try Bob Jones University
