Hello, I am a pharmacy student and I will be starting my professional classes and rotations. I'm required to dress up, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on the type of shoe, (preferably heels) and where I could find stylish yet comfortable ones to wear in the lab. Thanks!

  1. Heels??? I don't think so. Get comfortable walking shoes made by companies like Clarks, Merrell, Aerosoles, Naturalizer, etc... You may have to sacrifice some style but don't worry about it. As long as your footwear is clean and simple (no high top basketball sneaks or hiking boots ;)  it only matters that you dress "professionally" from the ankles up.

While you're at your rotations take at look at what the staff are wearing. Nurses will be wearing specially made nursing shoes or comfie tennis shoes (many probably have orthotic inserts from the years they've spent on their feet), and so will many pharmacists! Female doctors may have nice walking shoes on if they are in office clothes while doing rounds but rarely heels, and if they are surgeons or residents in scrubs they will be wearing sneakers or clogs..... again, no heels.

The only medical professional you will see in heels on a regular basis will probably be administrators who only have to be on their feet when they are going from their office to a meeting, then lunch, and back. But even they wear comfortable shoes most of the time!

And wearing heels during your lab instruction is probably not a very good idea especially if you will be using a clean room requiring you to don little booties... those will only work over flats or very low heels.

  2. Heels, are you nuts?  s***w style, and embrace comfort.  You want something with a thick sole.  I've been using a pair of black skechers.

  3. If you are going to be on your feet a lot High heels are not the best!! a thick soled walking shoe would be best!!
