The Manchester United assistant manager has admitted that his team need to work harder in order to make an impact in this season’s UEFA Champions League after their disastrous exit from the same competition last season at the
group stages following their woeful performances at home and away...
After making it to the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2011, Manchester United failed to take things forward to the next level in the same tournament in 2011-2012 version of the Champions League as they failed to progress
past the group stages last season.
United were a part of a relatively easy group from which they should’ve qualified easily for the latter knockout stages of the competition but a combination of complacency and injury problems hindered United’s aims of doing so.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have now been given a similar group this time around which has raised questions about their attitude once again as they can perhaps take their run to the round of 16 for granted due to the weak nature of
their opponents in the group stages.
Sir http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-c4752 has already confirmed that such will not be the case as Manchester United will go all out to top the group this time around. Phelan has been blamed in some quarters for Manchester United’s failure to impress in Europe
as well as the club has not done fairly well in the Champions League ever since http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carlos-c8346 Queiroz parted ways with the Manchester giants.
Phelan has since then been responsible for some of the tactical oversight at the club but it can be said that he has had a very limited squad to work with. United brought in the likes of Shingi Kagawa and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Robin-van-Persie-c31380 in the
summer to bolster their ranks therefore it will be interesting to see how far they can go in this season’s UEFA Champions League.
Phelan said, "Europe's always big at this football club. The traditions are set within the European boundaries for Manchester United and we know we have to do better. We let Europe slip from our grasp too easily last year. The
players are conscious and aware of that.”
He added, "You learn it's a team game, even though individuals change matches. Everybody has to be fully focused for the entire match - from first to last whistle. I think we also know that we need to score plenty of goals.”
