Phenomenal Golden State Warriors continue to impress; Drop New Orleans Hornets 103-96: NBA Recap
The Golden State Warriors are for real. They have been the biggest surprise package in NBA this season and after tonight’s away 103-96 win against the New Orleans Hornets, they improved to 17-8, their best start since the 1991-92 season, when the team began 21-8.
The Warriors were led by David Lee on the night. The power forward continued his sensational season with 26 points on a 10-16 shooting. He also grabbed 9 rebounds for the Warriors, who also got 19 points and three steals from Klay Thompson. Jarrett Jack had a 16 point-10 assist double-double off the bench while Carl Landry fell one rebound shy of his own at 16 points. Stephen Curry was cold from the floor tonight. He went 5 of 13 for 13 points.
The Hornets were paced by 28 points from Ryan Anderson. Anthony Davis made a return to the starting lineup and ended the night with 15 points and 16 rebounds for the 5-19 Hornets, the worst team in the Western Conference.
Hornets matched the Warriors in nearly every facet of the game, but got beaten on the glass. They were out-rebounded 44-33, and a differential of 9 on the offensive boards. They were up by 16-15 with nearly five minutes to go in the first quarter, when the visitors pulled off a 16-5 run to make it a ten point game at the close of one.
Warriors opened the second quarter with a 7-3 run to stretch their lead to 14, but the Hornets fought back and had made it a 39-45 game near the mid quarter mark. The Warriors were relentless and increased their lead back to double figures before Austin Rivers made a 10 foot jumper to close the half at 50-59.
The Warriors continued to dominate in the third and never allowed the Hornets to cross the 8 point barrier at any time. They ended the frame with an 82-72 lead and at 90-78 seemed well on their way, before the Hornets started a comeback.
With 6:31 left on the clock, Greivis Vasquez knocked down a three to start a 14-2 run which was capped by a three point play by Davis, tying the score at 92. Jack missed a jumper on the next Golden State possession, but after Landry stole the ball from Davis, he got fouled and made both of his free throws. Hornets missed their next three shots to give Warriors a 6 point cushion. The visitors then made 5 of six free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
