Phenomenal performance takes Kolohe Andino to Round 5 at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime
America’s Kolohe Andino advanced through into the fifth round (Round of 16) at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after putting on a superb performance to clinch top honours in the third heat of Round 3 (No-Elimination Round of 24) that
continued at the primary event site of Itauna Beach in Saquarema, Brazil, on Thursday, May 24.
Brazil’s Jean Da Silva finished in second place, while America’s Nat Young rounded out the bottom-position. As a result, both the surfers found themselves taking a trip to Round 4 to surf another heat to try and reserve their place in the fifth round.
Running for the third day in a row, the latest edition of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event continued to feature memorable performances by some of the best surfing talent from around the globe as they sought to keep themselves alive
in the contention for the event title. The two-to-three foot glassy waves offered by the sea on Thursday served as an ideal stage to deliver a series of exquisite performances.
The third heat of Round 3 saw Andino take on Da Silva and Young in a three-man battle for the Round 5 spot. There was not a lot of reason to fear defeat in the heat, though putting on strong performance for victory was also backed by a pretty strong motivation.
The 18-year-old Andino continued his excellent run of form in his latest challenge by putting on a spectacular performance. The young Californian sensation went through plenty of waves before locking a juicy wave to earn a 9.00 off it and went on to back
it up with an 8.33-point ride, thus moving to a heat-total of 17.33 points. The score held up until the end to see him off to victory.
“The waves have really gotten a lot smaller, but they still break pretty perfectly,” said Andino during his post-heat interview. “There were more rights breaking today [Thursday] and I’m glad to get into the Round of 16. I hope to at least get into the Quarters
to get a good result and increase my ranking.”
Da Silva collected a couple of scores in the six-point range to finish with a heat-total of 13.37 points, while an impressive 7.00-point ride followed by an ordinary 4.80-point effort resulted in third-place finish for Young. Both the surfers were consequently
relegated to the fourth round.
