Phil Archer gears up for the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal
Phil Archer is eyeing the upcoming Madeira Islands Open – Portugal, as he said that he is eager to win the prestigious tournament.
The 40-year-old English golfer is in the field of the European Tour event, scheduled to start from May 10 to 13, at the Santo da Serra in Madeira, Portugal.
“It’s a shame Madeira is the same week as Brittany as it means I won’t be able to defend my title,” said Archer. “But I can’t turn down a €675,000 prize fund, so there’s no question of where I’ll be playing”.
“Madeira is like a Major for the Challenge Tour players because of the much bigger purse than the majority of the other tournaments on the schedule. I’m glad to be going there in good form and at the top of the Rankings, and fingers crossed I can cement
that position with another good performance”.
He was playing at the European Challenge Tour and won the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Classic in March. He scored an 8-under 280 and earned a whopping €29,946.84.
Previously, he also displayed a stellar performance at The Barclays Kenya Open and finished on the third position. He scored an 8-under 276 in Kenya and played well throughout the four days.
Archer also finished 11th at the The Gujarat Kensville Challenge 2012 and earned €4,000.
Now, after achieving a successful finish at the European Challenge Tour, he is aiming to do his best at the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal.
“My confidence is sky high at the minute, so there’s no reason why I can’t go and get another good result there,” Archer said.
He is capable enough to be impressive in the event. He will be facing tough rivals such as Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Baldwin, Andrew Johnston and Gary Orr.
Most of the Tours’ leaders are not playing in Portugal. Some will be resting and some have commitments for other tournaments.
The upcoming tournament will be providing a great opportunity for the Englishman Archer to impress the spectators and his fans.
Analysts said that he has plenty of chances to be on the top of the leaderboard. They said he should focus on his putting and consistency throughout the four rounds of the tournament.
