Phil Davis replaces Chael Sonnen against Forrest Griffin – UFC News
Earlier this week, the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced that the American Gangster Chael Sonnen will no longer fight against Forrest Griffin at UFC 155, as Sonnen needs to prepare for his participation in The Ultimate Fighter season 17.
While many were thinking that Forrest Griffin would go head to head against his former nemesis Stephan Bonnar, the UFC confirmed today that Bonnar would no longer be a part of it. According to the UFC, it would be Phil ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Davis who will face
Griffin next.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced the scheduled fight via twitter, “Forrest Griffin vs. Phil Mr. Wonderful Davis. December 29th. MGM Garden Arena. Write it down. on.ufc.com/TyaakT.”
In other words, the fears of most fighters came true. While Sonnen was to make his light heavyweight comeback against Griffin in December, he will no longer do it. Instead, the American Gangster got a title shot at Jones without even proving anything. As
most of them are putting it, the only reason as to why Sonnen gets his matches is that he can trash-talk.
Sonnen will be taking on Jones at The Ultimate Fighter season 17. He has not fought anyone at the light heavyweight level to prove his mettle or to prove himself worthy of the shot. Most other fighters, including middleweight champion Anderson Silva, are
shocked over the UFC’s decision, believing that president Dana White made an unjust decision.
However, White has defended his decision saying that the fight was meant to happen as fans wants to see Sonnen taking on Jones.
“I understand completely [about Sonnen not having won a fight at light heavyweight], but it's a fight people want to see,” said White in an interview with Yahoo! Sports.
“This wasn't where I was going. But when this happened and Jones was going to be out for so long, it made sense,” he added.
For now, the fight between Sonnen and Jones has been scheduled and there is nothing anyone can do about it. For the naysayers, sure Sonnen is not worthy of the shot but for Dana White, he is the only man who is willing to face Jones at any cost unlike others.
