Phil Godman may make World Cup
Scotland’s international fly half Phil Godman will hope to be fit for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand 2011. The Edinburgh player will be out for at least six months after picking up a serious knee injury during a training session.
Godman tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Tuesday. The player was immediately sent for a scan at the Spire Murrayfield Hospital with the Edinburgh medical team.
James Robson, the Scottish team doctor said, “He will have to undergo surgery in due course to repair the knee ligaments, but we will be working to deliver him ready to be considered for selection for the World Cup squad.”
The 28-year-old will miss the Autumn Internationals against New Zealand, World Champion’s South Africa, and Samoa at Hampden Park. He is also set to miss the entire Six Nations campaign. However, the Scottish international will hope that he can make a return
to club rugby at the end of the season and spend the summer training for the World Cup with the Scotland squad, which starts in September 2011.
Godman will also be a huge miss for Edinburgh who play Leinster on Friday. The club will bring in David Blair as their first choice out-half and Tom Brown, Scotland’s under-20 full back will move to the bench as Blair’s replacement. Edinburgh coach Rob Moffat
said, “it’s desperate bad luck for Phil” and that he “is a key player for us”.
Godman may find it difficult to make the Scottish squad with this injury. He has 23 caps at international level, but the likes of Dan Parks and Ruaridh Jackson will have more time to impress during the season. Scottish full back Chris Patterson has also
played in the number 10 position and if Godman has not had enough first team action, the Scottish coach Andy Robinson may prefer to pick these players in his squad.
