Phil Golding secures his first Senior Tour victory at the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open – Golf News
Phil Golding of England fired a sensational five-under par 66, in the final round of the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open, to secure his maiden European Senior Tour victory last week.
The tournament was being staged at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, featuring some of the best players from the Senior Tour.
Entering the final round, Golding was trailing the leader and home favourite Ian Woosnam by six shots. Meanwhile, when Woosnam, along with other players failed to maintain momentum in the final round, Golding kept control over
his game and surged to the top of the leaderboard, courtesy of six-birdies against just a lone bogey.
Woosnam double bogeyed twice on day three and faltered for a four-over par 75, to finish tied for the third position.
Golding, in the meantime, made a strong start and carded three birdies on the front nine of the course to make it to the top of the leaderboard. He then added another three shots to his scorecard to go well ahead of his rivals
in the field.
Despite conceding a bogey on the 17th hole, he managed to secure an emphatic two-stroke victory over David J Russell. Golding’s final score at the end of the event was a two-under par 211 – he was the only player in the field to
break the par in Bridgend, Wales.
Talking to the European Senior Tour’s official website, he said that his brilliant game was the main factor behind his success in the tournament.
“I have to admit that I didn’t play at my best today in terms of ball striking and of the tee, but my short game was really on early in the round and I made some really important par saves early on to stay in the tournament,” he
said.
“Obviously I have kind of spoiled Woosie’s party here in his homeland but I am sure he won’t hold it against me too much – he has had a lot more success in his career than I ever will and I am just so happy to get my first Senior
Tour win,” added the Englishman.
Woosnam, on the other hand, was really disappointed with his final round performance, especially after leading the first two rounds of the tournament. The defending champion Barry Lane and Andrew Oldcorn were the other two players
who shared the third spot with Woosnam, after each player posted a one-over par tournament score.
