Phil Grenfell will join the American Competitive Cycling Racing Team in 2012
Australian cyclist Phil Grenfell’s impressive performance in the 2011season has earned him a place in the Competitive Cycling Racing Team for the 2012 season. Team Manager, Gordon Fraser, has shown faith in the rider and he believes that Phil will help the
team in achieving its goals in 2012.
Phil won the Australian National Road Series in the current season as he was riding with the domestic team, BikeBug.com. He secured wins at the Tour of Murray River, Tour of Tasmania and Tour of Gippsland.
Grenfell was keen to find a team in Australia but has now finally decided to join the American Continental Team. He believes that riding in different conditions will certainly develop him as a better rider.
He told cyclingnews, "It was a goal I had at the beginning of the year. To have a good season here, get some results, and move over to the US. I just thought that the racing over there suits my characteristics and it’s also a great pathway for progression”.
Phil further added, "Going to Europe would’ve been too much too soon. This way I get to go to the US and come back late in the season for a few races in Australia as well".
The 22-year-old also mentioned that his new team does not have many options in the sprint department and his sprinting skills will certainly come in handy for the team. He will be given enough opportunities to prove his metal in the Competitive Cyclist Racing
Team.
Francisco Mancebo helped the team in dominating the stage races in 2011 but he could not perform consistently during the criteriums.
Phil mentioned that the main reason behind joining the team was that he will be given adequate chances in the coming season.
Competitive Cyclist Racing Team is short of riders who can really finish off the race which makes Grenfell a perfect fit for the team’s roster. He is keen to ride the Australian Criterium Championship before finally joining the American squad in January.
Phil will join the league of other Australians who will turn professional in 2012. It will be interesting to see how Grenfell performs in Competitive Cyclist Racing Team for the season ahead.
