Phil Hill has died.?

It's a very sad day for motorsport. I want to know what everyone thought of him as a driver.

Yes, a shame. 81 I think he was. The only American born F1 world champion too.

Little fact, do you remember the film Grand prix? Phil Hill did most of the driving for it.

He was a great man, I don't think you'll find anybody who ever heard him commentate or heard him be interviewed who would say otherwise.

As a driver, he was a good all-rounder, but probably better in sportscars than in F1, as his 3 Le Mans wins show. Enzo Ferrari took years to finally put him in an F1 car, and certainly never considered him as his number one driver in F1, preferring Hawthorn, Collins, Brooks, Behra and von Trips from 1958-61. It is telling that at Monza in 1960 Ferrari entrusted the F2 car which would form the basis of the 1961 F1 car to von Trips, not Hill; sure, Hill went on to win the race in his obsolete front-engined car after the withdrawal of all the English teams, but it was von Trips who got his hands on the new rear-engined car first.

His 1961 F1 title was fortunate, in that he not only had the best car, but also that the best driver - Moss - only finished 3 races all season (winning 2 of those, though) AND his world-championship leading teammate von Trips was killed at the penultimate race.

He is a good riders...But in fact I haven't born in that time. I'm 1993. But I know a little bit about him. He is 1961 world championship winner and he died in 2008 cause Parkinson...it's hurts...

I was 1 when he won for Ferrari in 1961, but as i grew up and became interested in F1 i became aware of him and his achievements: America's first F1 driver's champion and a great ambassador for the sport of  F1 in the US. Montezemolo paid his respects to the late great Phil Hill in the link provided below... RIP
