Phil Hughes agrees to a one year contract with New York Yankees – MLB News
According to an authentic sports website, Phil Hughes has agreed to a non-guaranteed $ 3.2 million deal with New York Yankees. Getting a $ 500,000 raise after an injury troubled 2011 season, the right handed pitcher will be considering himself extremely lucky.
Hughes was unable to make the most of available opportunities in 2011 as he went 5-5 with a poor 5.79 ERA in three relief appearances and 14 starts. Although he had an excellent 2010 season (18 wins), the guy failed to deliver the goods in the past season. Still very new to the Major League Baseball world, Hughes will be looking to prove his metal in 2012 season.
In July 2011, Hughes experienced a right hand shoulder injury. Giving up five or more runs in each of his first three starts, he looked completely out of sorts. Being on the disabled list, he had to miss quite a few games. For his unavailability, he was referred as the “dead arm” by the club.
Showing great determination and fighting spirit, he bounced back brilliantly after the DL, allowing only two or few earned runs in eight of his eleven starts. He will be looking to achieve similar sorts of results in the MLB season starting in a few weeks.
In his five big league seasons with the Club, Hughes has not been able fulfill his immense potential. With a decent 36-23 record, he has failed to live up to the expectations on many occasions.
The Yankees, on the other hand, are expecting Hughes to train hard. They look very optimistic about his progress as he is one of those players, who can single handedly win the game for them.
The Yankees have already spent considerable amount of money to strengthen their starting rotation. They have at least seven pitchers hoping to fit the five man roster. Michael Pineda and veteran right handed Hiroki Kuroda will be leading their pitching pack in 2012 season.
Hughes is expected to take part in spring training season but he will be in a three way battle with A.J. Burnett and Freddy Garcia for the final spot.
