Phil Hughes and Raul Ibanez help New York Yankees overcome Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 – MLB Update
New York Yankees thrashed the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Monday, July 16 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Joe Girardi and his men looked in complete control in a game that turned out to be fairly one sided at the end. After losing the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels, New York needed to get back on the right track. Russell Martin homered to right
in the second inning to break the deadlock and give his team a dream start.
Robinson Cano was also determined to improve his batting average and he doubled to deep-right in the third inning to extend Yankees’ lead 2-0. Adam Lind homered for the Blue Jays in the fourth inning as the momentum shifted from one way to the other.
Edwin Encarnacion, who has recently signed a contract with the Blue Jays, doubled to deep left-centre to level the score 2-2. However, the Yankees were not prepared to give up in front of their massive home crowd. Raul Ibanez brought the local fans back
to life as he connected for a Grand Slam in the eighth inning.
"I don't really think about it that much. Just try to do whatever I can to help out," Ibanez said of his clutch hitting. "Just try to stay in the moment."
"He didn't say exactly when" Blue Jays’ manager John Farrell said of Jose Bautista. "But through the course of completing the swing he felt a little bit of a popping sensation."
"I'm not sure how many extra at-bats he's gotten," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said of Ibanez."But he's gotten a lot more playing time in left field and that's probably helped his numbers, his production."
J.P. Arencibia singled to left for a consolidation run in the bottom of the ninth but New York held on to their lead comfortably to take 1-0 lead in the series.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes had another decent outing as he gave up just two runs and four hits in seven solid innings. Relief pitcher David Robertson grabbed his first win of the season, throwing a perfect inning.
