Phil Hughes helps New York Yankees overcome Boston Red Sox 2-0 – MLB Update
New York Yankees shut-out the Boston Red Sox 2-0 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday, September 13 in third game of their four match series.
Starting pitcher Phil Hughes produced another magical performance as he gave up just five hits in seven scoreless innings. Striking-out seven batters, he used his sliders and fastballs very effectively to grab his 15th win of the season.
Relief pitchers Boone Logan, David Robertson and Rafael Soriano kept the pressure on the Red Sox as they tossed up 1.2 scoreless innings to help the Yankees prevail.
Left fielder Andruw Jones played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he hit a sacrifice fly to right in the fourth inning to put Yankees on the board. Derek Jeter also made a handy contribution in a low scoring contest as he earned an RBI
single to centre in the seventh to double New York’s lead 2-0.
"It's kind of hard to think about it now because you're trying to win games, especially this time of year," Jeter said, "but I'd be lying to you if I didn't think it was special."
"Hughes pitched up in the strike zone and we couldn't lay off it," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said. "We were immature in our approach at times."
"On probably about one ankle," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "That's who he is. He's a fighter and he finds a way, and he gets the big hit tonight.”
"I'm fine," said Jeter, who suffered an ankle injury in Game 2.
Yankees executed their game plan to perfection in a crucial American League East game. With their win, the Yankees tied with Baltimore Orioles for first place on AL East standings table. Yankees ended first half of the season on an extremely bright note
but they have struggled to maintain their excellent form in the second half.
Nonetheless, Joe Girardi and company are well placed to reach the playoffs and it will be interesting to see if they can reclaim the number one status by giving consistent results in their next series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
