Phil Hughes helps New York Yankees rout Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 – MLB Update
New York Yankees edged the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Tuesday, August 28 in second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes put up another powerful performance, creating all sorts of problems for the Blue Jays’ batting line-up. Overall, Hughes gave up just four hits and a run in seven solid innings while striking-out five batters. Showing
great composure and character on the mound, he grabbed his 13th win of the season.
David Robertson and Rafael Soriano combined to pitched two scoreless innings to ensure the Yankees reach home safely.
"Why you got to throw too many sliders, when you got a good fastball?" Soriano said Rivera asked him. "I said, 'Forget about last night and let me do something different.'"
"The best day I had all year," Soriano said.
For the Blue Jays, Ricky Romero allowed just five hits and two runs to take his 12th
loss of the season. He will be looking to put things back on track on his next MLB appearance.
"He was very sharp tonight," Toronto manager John Farrell said. "He was efficient and I think he benefited from a couple of extra days' rest."
"I've been working hard all week, the guys, everyone has kind of been helping me out through this," Romero said. "I'm just going to build off of this."
Nick Swisher once again provided New York with an excellent start as he singled to centre in the third inning to put his side on the board. Curtis Granderson also continued his great hitting form as he hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the fourth inning to
double the lead to 2-0.
Blue Jays’ third baseman Adeiny Hechavarria homered to right in the fifth inning to bring his side back into the contest but the Yankees held their nerves to complete a deserving victory.
With their win, the Yankees improved their record to 75-54 to move four games ahead of second placed Baltimore Orioles on the American League East Division standings and it will be safe to say that they are the favourites to win the league title.
