Phil Hughes shines as New York Yankees rout Baltimore Orioles 12-3 – MLB Update
New York Yankees hammered the Baltimore Orioles 12-3 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Wednesday, August 1 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Robinson Cano belted a mighty grand slam in the third inning to give the Yankees a much needed win that snapped their season high four game losing streak. New York had lost to the Orioles in the first two games and it was extremely important for them to
up their game in the finale to avoid a humiliating series sweep.
Curtis Granderson had a great time on the plate as he homered to right in the first inning to set the tone for the rest of the match. Adam Jones also made a valuable contribution with the bat as he hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the first to double the
Yankees’ lead to 2-0.
Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher drove in two runs in the second inning to extend Yankees’ lead to 4-1 and the offence absolutely dominated Orioles’ pitching attack in the third, scoring seven runs to make the score 11-1.
"Your heart gets racing again, just to know that door's opening, your name is called and you're going to pitch," said relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain, who returned to major league world after almost fourteen months. "It was something that I will remember
for the rest of my life."
"I was curious to see how he would do today because I'm sure there's a lot of emotions," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said of Chamberlain. "He threw strikes. I'm happy with that. I didn't think he tried to overthrow today."
First baseman Casey McGehee and short-stop Jayson Nix earned RBI’s as the Yankees ended the game on an extremely aggressive note. Starting pitcher Phil Hughes had another terrific outing as he pitched six solid innings for his 11th win of the
season.
Hughes gave up just a run on nine hits with two strike-outs to keep Baltimore on the defensive. It will be interesting to see if he can come up with another decent performance on his next appearance to impress the skipper Joe Girardi.
