Phil Hughes sparks as New York Yankees defeat Minnesota Twins 8-1 - MLB Update

New York Yankees’ starter, Phil Hughes had a tremendous day with the ball as he pitched just over seven innings and gave up just two hits with an ERA of 5.75 in the Yankees’ 8-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, Minnesota on August 19.
Twins got off to a decent start as they scored one run during first inning to get a 1-0 lead. But unfortunately, Twins were unable to score any runs in the remaining eight innings. At the bottom of first inning, Trevor Plouffe hit a solo homer (368 feet)
towards left-field to lift the momentum of Twins.
In second inning, the batters failed to contribute some runs on the score-board and got out. Nick Swisher singled to left-field at the top of second inning but at centre-field, Robinson Cano lined out and Endy Chavez flied out. Jorge Posada lined out to
right-field without taking any run.
Russell Martin struck a solo homer (354 feet) towards left-field to level the game 1-1, at the top of third inning. Yankees went ahead 2-1 during fourth inning when Cano drove a double-run shot to deep right-centre and Mark Teixeira posted a leading run.
At the top of fifth inning, Yankees added two runs to their individual score-card to move it 4-1.
Curtis Granderson doubled to right-field and Brett Gardner scored a single run. The second run during fifth inning was taken by Derek Jeter when Teixeira hit a sacrifice fly towards left-field. Granderson moved to third base to end the fifth inning. Yankees’
batters again blasted two runs in sixth inning to advance their lead 6-1.
Martin struck a two-run homer (405 feet) towards left-field and Posada contributed a single run for Yankees. In seventh and eighth inning, the relievers threw pretty well to stop the runs. Hughes permitted one run, three walks, one earned run and one homer
on his 106 pitches.
Hughes said, “It's not even my focus, playoffs or the next rotation around or who is going to be the guy left out.”
In the ninth inning, Jeter and Granderson both added two consecutive runs for the Yankees to give them an 8-1 lead when Teixeira hit a double-run shot towards right-field. After having a comfortable win, Yankees led off the four-game series 2-0 played at
Target Field.
