Phil Hughes struggles as Detroit Tigers beat New York Yankees 10-7 – MLB Update
The New York Yankees’ strategy to take on their rivals with aggression backfired on Sunday, April 3 as Phil Hughes struggled to execute his 89-91 mph ball, enabling the Detroit Tigers to capitalise with a 10-7 victory at Yankee Stadium.
The Tigers first win could not have been possible without an all-round performance of Brennan Boesch. He had exhibited his talent in 2010 as a left-handed sensation, as his fly balls enabled his inclusion and subsequently win the confidence of his team manager
to play this year’s Major League Baseball season.
The fifth inning two-run homer gave Boesch the poise to compensate his two earlier hits at right-field which remained ground-ball singles. Despite a few fumbles and seeming inability to pave the way for a Tigers’ victory, Boesch somehow made a base for Miguel
Cabrera’s home-runs. Following the double RBIs on Ryan Raburn’s tally in the ninth, as the Tigers had scored in double digits.
Boesch, who apparently ran a solo show on Sunday night, won praises from none other than the Yankee’s right-fielder Nick Swisher. He complimented him on his pitching and his accuracy in throwing some brilliant balls.
The Tiger’s right-fielder Magglio Ordonez, suffering from a sore right ankle, had stirred intense debate whether or not the team would be able to make any mark without a seasoned pitcher in the side. His absence from the team had brought Max Scherzer who
was mercilessly targeted by the Yankees, but to no avail. He gave up home-runs that have to be saved in the future games in case the Tigers want to avoid any debacle after showing their potential to be a rival that means business.
Hughes, on the other hand, knew what the match held for them. Boesch that played some sensational innings last night was something that Hughes looked with frustrating helplessness. Hughes made his feelings known by crediting Boesch for hitting anything that
is worth punishing. “I reckon the seven times I have gotten him out,” Hughes said, “They were all perfectly executed. The other seven were the times he hit the ball.”
The win has given the Tigers some much needed confidence and the Yankees with a sense of apprehension. Hughes has to make a comeback, which he is expected to do. The potential and talent he has are too good for him not to.
The Tigers put in a tremendous effort as they managed to restrict the mighty Yankees’ offence. New York will be looking to improve from this performance and work on their offensive strategy. The game was exciting as both fought hard, but it was the Tigers
that prevailed in the end.
