Phil Humber looking to replace Jake Peavy in rotation for the Chicago White Sox
Jake Peavy is out of commission for a long period of time that is likely to extend beyond the Opening Day encounter in the 2011 Major League Baseball. The player is set to be shut down till at least until the first week of April, providing Phil Humber a
chance to shine. The player has impressed the management in Peoria, Arizona, and is looking to leave spring training on a high note as he prepares to go on to the starting role on Thursday.
"I'm starting Thursday and that's the only thing I can worry about right now," Humber said. "I can't worry about when Jake is coming back or this or that. Every opportunity you get, you have to run with it. Hopefully I've shown them enough for them to have
confidence in me. I know I have confidence in myself.
"There's no more pressure. I'm trying to make a good impression every time I'm out there. There's still work to be done and I'm not taking anything for granted. I'm trying to go out there and earn it every day."
The upcoming pitcher is doing well so far, and recently discussed with the pitching coach, Don Cooper, on his chances to make it to the rotation this year. With a strong cutter in the package, Humber is sure to be on the main road to regular league soon.
"It has definitely been huge for me, being able to put more movement on my fastball," Humber said."
Humber talked about his cutters, specifying that he availed a lot of outs with the delivery. He told the press that when one comes across a sticky situation, it is always good to have something in the arsenal, which is able to avoid the meaty part of the
bat. His tenure in the Cactus League games has worked for him well over spring.
The Thursday game will showcase Humber on the mound for the starter’s position, and will be nationally televised. The fixture is set against the Chicago Cubs and is a chance for the player to do a lot for the future in the team.
