Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods attract huge numbers on CBS
Two great golfers, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, gained the highest TV rating while playing the final round at the Pebble Beach.
Mickelson is the winner of AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, whereas Woods finished tied for the fifteenth position on the leaderboard.
Their appearance at Pebble Beach was the hottest. Both of them attracted an overwhelming number of spectators on the course and on TV.
After almost 15 years, CBS Sports gained such high ratings on TV, while showing game of Woods and Mickelson.
According to CBS, the rating on Sunday was 5.1 with a 10 share. If it is compared against the last year’s final day, they technically increased by 96%.
In the past, Pebble Beach was never watched or rated such highly except for in 1997. The network recorded 5.8 with a 13 share, while showing Mark O’Meara, Woods and David Duval's game play.
CBS officials are happy to meet somewhat near ratings after 15 years. Both players played extremely well and were able to gain a high number of viewers, benefiting golf and CBS at the same time.
Mickelson displayed a tremendous performance and scored a 17-under par and 269. This was his 40th Professional Golf Association’s win.
The 41-yera-old American had a two-stroke lead, delivering 19 birdies and an eagle on the 6th hole.
He again tried his level best to save bogeys and only struck four throughout the tournament. Achieving an average of 272.8 driving distance helped him gain a lead over other players in the field.
His tremendous performance attracted a huge numbers on CBS and the network was able to meet 1997’s high ratings of Pebble Beach’s final round.
On the other hand, Woods did not perform well on Sunday. However, being the hottest player in the field increased the network's rating.
He scored an 8-under par, 278 and tied for the fifteenth position. He displayed an average performance in the final round and was unable to remain under par.
Striking five bogeys and only two birdies was not expected from Woods.
Still, he is the favourite among all the viewers and helped CBS increase its ratings. CBS was happy about telecasting Mickelson and Woods the whole day.
The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am of 2012 has ended, becoming the most successful so far. The network has to wait till the next year to meet such appealing ratings once again.
