Phil Mickelson a proud winner of the Pebble Beach, Charlie Wi finishes second
Phil Mickelson added another victory to his career by winning the title of AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in California.
The 41-year-old American professional golf player defeated the Korean Charlie Wi and another American Ricky Barnes.
Mickelson scored a 17-under par and 269 strokes in total. Nineteen birdies, forty-eight pars and one eagle proved helpful for him to gain a lead over the others and win by a two-stroke margin.
He was very happy on Sunday, February 12, 2012. This was his first win of this season and the 40th at the PGA.
"It just feels great to win this tournament," Mickelson said. "It's a special place for me, Pebble Beach, and to have a win here, where my grandfather caddied, feels awesome".
He gained plenty of confidence from this tournament. The four-time major winner earned a handsome figure of $1,152,000, which increased his motivation and now he has planned to be more impressive in future.
He continued, "I felt like my game was so close heading into the season, and yet my scores didn't reflect how I felt I was playing. To put it together this week, especially the final round, just feels terrific".
"It gives me a lot of confidence but also inspires me because I believe what I'm doing is correct and that I'm able to play some of my best golf," Mickelson added.
Wi, the Korean national, scored a 15-under par and 271 strokes in total. He gave a tough time to the leader.
He displayed an impressive game till the third round, but due to grim performance on Sunday, he slid to the second position.
He stroked three bogeys and a double bogey on the final day. However, till three rounds he had struck just four bogeys.
He has improved his game and is capable enough to be the leader in the next tournament.
Ricky Barnes, another American, was on the third position and four strokes behind the leader. He scored a 13-under par and 273 strokes in total.
Firing merely five birdies did not hurt him while securing the third position. He would have won the event, if he had controlled his bogeys.
The amazing tournament of Pebble Beach is over now. The next tournament is the Northern Trust Open scheduled from February 16 to 19 and all the top leading players including Luke Donald are in the field.
