Phil Mickelson and four others added to the World Golf Hall of Fame – Golf News
Phil Mickelson, along with other four golf personalities, has been added to the World Golf Hall of Fame on Monday, May 7, 2012.
The other four players include the two-time major winner from Scotland, Sandy Lyle, writer Dan Jenkins, four-time LPGA major champion Hollis Stacy and broadcaster Peter Alliss.
He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame because of his great contributions to the game and his continuous efforts to work for the sport.
"I would like to thank him in addition for being a role model, a role model for young players coming up, and a role model for people who play the game of golf just for fun, because you've never seen Phil Mickelson on or off the golf course that he wasn't
showing the proper professionalism that you want to see in any athlete, particularly an athlete in our sport," said Tim Finchem, the PGA Tour Commissioner.
According to him, no one can achieve his goal until he/she dreams big. Therefore, he started thinking about the game even when he was not able to hold a club.
Thereafter, he grew up and started outshining his opponents in different tournaments around the world. In total, he recorded 40 PGA Tour victories including four major championships.
In addition to that , he also won seven events on the European Tour as well as a maiden victory on the Challenge Tour.
"They can attest that you can't start fulfilling your dreams until you dream big," Mickelson said about the other four inductees.
On the other hand, Jenkins is third player added to the Hall of Fame. Yet, he is unique in a sense that he is the only one to be inducted alive as the other two were awarded with the prestige after they died.
"I'm particularly pleased to be taken in as a vertical human," said Jenkins, who has covered a total of 210 major events since the US Open in 1951.
Alliss has been added because of his great contributions to the game while playing in the field as well commentating for television.
He won a total of 23 European Tour events and represented the US team in the Ryder Cup eight times during his career prior to start working for BBC.
