Phil Mickelson calls his coach to diagnose his swing problems – Golf News
The left-handed American golfer, Phil Mickelson, made a call to his swing coach, Butch Harmon, on Saturday, after he made some loose shots on the first two days of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) Scottsdale, Arizona.
Mickelson is in a struggle to make a comeback from his poor performance in the Farmers Insurance Open where he missed the cut for the first time in the last 10 years.
However, he did not manage to score low in the Phoenix Open too which forced him to contact his instructor.
Therefore, he spent about a couple of hours on the phone while talking to Harmon who gave him several tips on how to improve his swing in the event.
“I flew Butch in (Saturday) morning because yesterday, the front nine kind of shook me up,” Mickelson said.
He added, “We had a really good session and I was able to feel much more confident. I hit a lot of good shots especially early on and made some birdies”.
Mickelson managed a four-under par 67 in the third round which helped him finish eight strokes behind the leader, Spencer Levin.
Mickelson said that he was greatly helped by Harmon’s tips in the third round. Moreover, he is now in a position to finish among the top 10 in the tournament.
He also emphasised that he has not been able to diagnose the problem in his swing which was causing a huge trouble for him. Therefore, he contacted Harmon to help him out in that regard.
“I want to self-correct, but if I'm not quite finding it I need a little help,” Mickelson said. “Butch is the best. Butch can identify things so quickly and get you straightened up right away”.
Mickelson bogeyed only three times in the first three rounds and a double bogey on Friday’s sixth hole, which made him think seriously about the troubles he had in his swing.
“You never know what might happen. This is a golf course that is very penalising if you miss it a little bit,” he said.
He is currently in no position to contend for the top position. However, he believes that he can still bring a twist in the game with some birdies and eagles at TPC Scottsdale.
