Phil Mickelson confident to offset the impact of triple bogey at the Wells Fargo Championship – Golf News
Phil Mickelson was three-under par through 12 holes when the opening round of the Wells Fargo Championship witnessed him reach a equal-par on the very next hole as he carded a triple bogey on the par-four fourth hole on Thursday, May 3, 2012.
Last month, he did the same thing during the final round of the Masters Tournament, which cost him the green jacket in the end.
This time, it did not cost him the Wells Fargo Championship; however, it did shatter his confidence in the opening phase of the tournament.
During the Masters, he only had 14 holes left to overcome the triple bogey he made in the final round.
On the contrary, he has now three days ahead of him to offset the blunder he made at the Quail Hollow Country Club.
Mickelson believes that he still has a chance to register a good scoer in two good rounds in an attempt to improve his position on the leaderboard.
“I played pretty well today, hit a lot of good shots, hit a lot of greens, but made one mistake with the triple,” Mickelson said.
“That was a really poor tee shot out of bounds. … But fortunately I came back to shoot 1-under and I’ll try to come out (Friday) and shoot something in the mid-60s and get in it for the weekend”.
Right after the triple bogey on Thursday, he birdied the fifth hole followed by a bogey. While playing the eighth hole, he recorded another birdie that allowed him to register an under-par score.
“It was a good way to finish there with a birdie on 8 and to just not shoot myself out of it. It wasn't the great round I was hoping for, but again, it's right there where if I can get a hot round, I'll get right in it,” he said.
In the meantime, Ryan Moore, Stewart Cink and Webb Simpson carded a seven-under par 65 each to take the top position on the leaderboard.
This left Mickelson six strokes behind the pace and he tied for the 56th position. Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood were also the top-notch players, as they were listed in the 24-way tie for the 56th spot.
