Phil Mickelson eager to bag the British Open title
The left-handed American Phil Mickelson is eager to bag the British Open title when he will tee off at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club on Thursday, July 19, 2012.
Mickelson shot a brilliant 68 in the final round of The Open Championship last year. Yet, he failed to list his name on top of the leaderboard and took the runner-up spot.
This time, he is confident to improve his position by one, as he believes that the feeling of last year’s finish has given him a boost while heading for the third major event this year.
He has made a total of 18 British Open appearances in his career so far and recorded only two top-10 finishes.
While talking to the media on Tuesday, he admitted that he was not a good player in bad weather conditions.
However, what he did last year was completely a different story, as he shrugged off his natural weakness. Meanwhile his critics were taken aback with a great display of his game.
"What was so much fun for me about last year was I was able to make a move in horrible weather and that's one of the things that has excited me because historically I've not played well in bad weather," said the 42-year-old American, who won this year’s
AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
"Now I look at it a little bit differently. I almost welcome it in a sense,” the four-time major champion added."I certainly have more confidence in competing and playing in bad weather and the different challenges that links golf presents after having had
some success after last year".
Meanwhile, he also accepted that the toughness of the course this year can also allow the streak of 15 new players joining the major winners’ league in the last 15 championship to continue.
However, Tiger Woods can be the only man who has the ability to break this momentum and record the 15th major title win of his career.
If he succeeds in doing that, he may also surge to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings once again.
