Phil Mickelson falters on day four, finishes third at the Wells Fargo Championship
Phil Mickelson missed out on a chance of winning the Wells Fargo Championship, after he faltered for a one-over par 73, in the final round, on Sunday, May 5, 2013.
The US$ 6.7 million tournament was being played at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, featuring a strong line-up.
The first two rounds of the tournament witnessed Mickelson played great shots on the course, as he managed to surge to the top of the leaderboard after carding 68 and 67, in the first two rounds.
He then lost momentum and posted a 73 in the third round. Yet, he managed to share the lead with Nick Watney.
In the final round, he made a slow start, as he bogeyed the third hole, followed by a birdie on the fifth hole, and reached the turn in even par.
After carding a birdie on the 14th hole, he was well ahead of his rivals and was a hot favourite to win the tournament. However, his bogey putts on the 16th and the 17th hole completely ruined his chances to remain on the top.
Talking to the reporters after completing his campaign in Charlotte, Mickelson expressed his disappointment in not finishing on top of the leaderboard.
He said that he had complete control over the game through the week. However, the last few holes turned the tables against his favour. As a result, he had to settle for the third position in the tournament.
"I felt like I was in control, and I let it slip away there the last few holes, so it was disappointing," said the three-time Masters Tournament winner. “There is just no excuse. It wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary or difficult. I
should have made par,” he said.
“The 17th and 18th holes aren’t really holes I could call birdie holes,” Mickelson added. “So I was fighting to hold on to that one-shot lead, thinking that it was going to be tough to par in to try to win. And sure enough, 16 and 17 got me.”
Watney, the other overnight leader, also failed to maintain consistency in his game and faltered for a four-over par 76, to finish tied for the 10th position.
